Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools serve Prior Lake, portions of Savage aPrior Lake-Savage Area Schools serve Prior Lake, portions of Savage and several townships south of Prior Lake. Residents will soon notice some changes in the district that will allow for the expanding student population, including the opening of Redtail Ridge Elementary (K-5) in the fall of 2008. The school will be located in south Savage at 6420 W. 154th St. Hidden Oaks Middle School also opened a new eight-lane swimming pool and separate diving well in June 2007.

Board of Education
The Prior Lake-Savage Area School Board is the school district’s governing body. It is composed of seven members, each of whom is a district resident elected by voters. The terms have been staggered, with elections conducted in November of odd-numbered years until 2010 when elections will be held during even-numbered years.
School board meetings are conducted twice a month, usually on the second and fourth Mondays at 7 p.m. at the District Services Center, 4540 Tower St. S.E., Prior Lake. Citizens who wish to address the school board on an agenda item may do so at the discretion of, and with advance notification of, the school board chairperson.
Citizens who wish to speak to the board regarding an item not on the agenda may do so during the open forum portion of the agenda. Current board members are:

Adult Education
Community Education Services classes are offered to adult learners in: GED preparation, adult diploma, English as a Second Language and tutoring in basic math, English and writing. Information about these opportunities is included in the Community Education Services catalog mailed four times a year to all district residents.

A full range of early childhood family education classes is available for expectant parents and those with children, birth to age 5. Included in the program is a preschool for children 4 or more years of age the year before they attend kindergarten. Screening for preschool children, as well as coordination with school readiness, is available through Early Childhood Family Education at Edgewood School.

Kids’ Company is District 719’s before- and after-school care program for children K-5, and is available in each of the elementary schools in the district. This program is available from 6:30 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Health Requirements
Health Services is staffed by licensed school nurses and health support personnel who are trained in First Aid and CPR. They are available during student hours in each school. Licensed school nurses assess the health needs of students; develop appropriate health, emergency and communicable disease plans; and make appropriate referrals with follow-up.
The district adheres to a “No Shot (or proof of exemption), No School” policy. This means that all students must meet the state immunization requirements prior to enrollment or schedule pick-up. Included is information about communicable diseases and the medication policy.

Parent-Teacher Groups
The PTC is a volunteer organization of parents, teachers and principals, working together to benefit children. Contact individual neighborhood elementary schools to become involved in the building level PTC.
Hidden Oaks Middle School and Twin Oaks have parent advisory groups (PACT and PAAG) that work with staff on special activities, fund-raisers and events for the students. Call 952-226-0700 or 952-226-0500 for more information.
The Parent Advisory Council at Prior Lake High School helps to meet the developmental needs of students by involving parents in a collaborative communication effort. The council meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the high school. Contact the school at 952-226-8600 for more information.

School Closings
In the event of inclement weather, school cancellations will be announced over WCCO radio (830) and local TV channels 4, 5, 9 and 11. Parents are reminded to use their judgment in determining the safety of their children on days of inclement weather.

School Lunches
Each school in the district has a full-preparation kitchen offering the menu of the day and at least one alternate choice. A la carte items can also be purchased. All schools will continue to use the prepaid computer system for payment of meals. Online credit card payments are available. Free and reduced-priced lunches are provided under state and federal guidelines. Applications are available in the school district calendar and at the District Services Center.

Transportation
School district policies have established walking distances of one-half mile for grades K-6 and 1 mile for grades 7-12. The prime consideration in transportation services is for student safety. Shakopee ISD 720

The Shakopee Public Schools serve 5,800 students in a rapidly growing, diverse community. The district opened a new high school for grades 10-12 in the fall of 2007. Shakopee Junior High moved grades 8 and 9 into the former Senior High, and a newly created Shakopee Middle School began serving all students in grades 6 and 7 in the former grade 7-9 building. A fifth elementary school opened as well, and all five elementary schools serve kindergarten through grade 5.

St. Michael’s offers a licensed preschool for children ages 3-5 and a fully accredited academic program for grades K-8. Central to the curriculum at the St. Michael School program is the integration of Gospel values and the development of a faith community. Religion, reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies and science are basic classes. Other classes include music, physical education, Spanish and art. Technology is integrated in grades K-8 curriculum. Band lessons begin at fourth grade for interested students.
Middle-school students (grades 7-8) begin each day in multi-aged homerooms with their advisor. Opportunities for leadership, service and development of personal talents and gifts are given to all middle-school students through the athletic program, fine arts and student council.
